INDIAN FESTIVALS 2008

 

ID-UL-ZUHA  - 11th JANUARY

Observed by the Muslims to commemorate the Prophet Ibrahim's offer to sacrifice his son.

MAKAR SANKRANTI/ PONGAL/ MAGHA BIHU - 14th JANUARY
A major harvest festival of India. It is one of the biggest events in the states of Tamil nadu, karnataka and Andhra pradesh. Bull fights and bullock races are important features of the celebrations. Also celebrated in the eastern region when millions of pilgrims take a holy dip in the Ganges.

REPUBLIC DAY - 26th JANUARY
The national festival in India observed throughout the country to mark the inauguration of the Republic of India on 26th January, 1950. In Delhi, the celebration include a magnificent parade of the armed forces,folk dances and floats from all parts of the country.

MAHA SHIVA RATRI - 6th MARCH
Hindus perform puja of Lord Shiva by fasting on this day.

GOOD FRIDAY / BARABAFAT - 21st MARCH
FESTIVAL OF CHRISTIANS / FESTIVAL OF MUSLIMS.
HOLI / DULHENDI - 21st & 22nd MARCH
The most boisterous of India's festivals, observed all over India. Men, women and children throw coloured water and powder on each other. Greetings and sweets are exchanged among friends and relatives.

RAMANAVAMI - 14th APRIL
Birthday of Lord Rama is celebrated all over India.The epic Ramayana is recited in temples and homes.

BAISAKHI - 13th APRIL
Baisakhi is a very popular festival of Punjab. It is celebrated to mark the harvesting season. To rejoice on this occasion, Bhangra and Gidha dances are performed all over Punjab.

MAHAVIR JAYANTI - 18th APRIL
Celebrated by Jains to mark the birth of Lord Mahavira.

AMBEDKAR JAYANTI - 14TH APRIL - Celebrated in memory of the father of Indian Constitution, Bhimrao ji Ambedkar

MAHARANA PRATAP JAYANTI - 6TH JUNE

INDEPENDENCE DAY - 15th AUGUST
The anniversary of India's Independence won on this day in 1947.

RAKSHA BANDHAN - 16th  AUGUST
Celebrated by Hindus & Sikhs particularly in northern India. Sisters tie holy thread / Rakhi on the wrists of their brothers wishing their long life. Brothers take oath to protect the honour and help them in adversaries.

JANAMASHTAMI - 24th AUGUST
The birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, celebrated with great enthusiasm all over the country, specially at Mathura and Vrindavan, which are closley associated with his childhood.

GANESH CHATURTHI - 3rd SEPTEMBER - Birthday of Lord Ganesha

GANDHI JAYANTI - 2nd OCTOBER
The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi - the father of the nation, is celebrated with reverence all over the country.

*ID-UL-FITRA - 2ND OCTOBER
Celebrated by the Muslim community. It is an occasion for fasting and rejoicing.

DUSSEHRA - 7th - 9th OCTOBER
Based on the epic story of Ramayana, the ten days Dussehra festival signifying the triumph of good over evil is celebrated all over the country. In North India, The Ramlila is staged to commemorate the heroism of Lord Rama. In Bengal, it is observed as Durga Puja and images of the warrior goddess Durga are immersed in lakes and rivers four days of worship.

DEEPAWALI - 28th OCTOBER
The brightest Indian festival when every city town and village is turned inot a fairyland with millions of electric light, candles and oil lamps illuminating homes and public buildings. A special feature of the festival is the worship of Laxmi- the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

GURU NANAK JAYANTI - 13th NOVEMBER
The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, is celebrated with great devotion.
CHRISTMAS DAY - 25th DECEMBER
The birht of Jesus Christ is celebrated in India with the traditional exchange of greetings and gifts.
